Last weekend we had a visitor, Carolyn, the Fulbright ETA in Sofia. On Saturday morning the weather was gloomy and rainy and mom was worried that it's not an ideal setting for someone to visit the city. But thanks to Goldie, the weather ended up being of little importance.
Goldie had been planning a night out to the Happy Village for a while now. She kept raving about the food, the music and the dancing. Mom, being weary of "dog-houses" (i.e. "skyladika") was a little skeptical, but game for giving it a try.
Весело Село (or "Happy Village") is a place that offers a "sigh of relief to the folk-art, delicious food and nice drink lovers". The girls got there around 8:30pm, settled down on the table that Goldie had reserved, right next to the dance floor, and began the endeavor of ordering from a very long and appetizing menu (fortunately in English as well).
At 9pm the show started. Mom was dumbfounded. She had not seen a show like this except in the old Greek movies that always included a scene or two at some "bouzoukia" club. The dancing included Bulgarian folk songs, Goran Bregovic, and quite a few Greek songs to mom's surprise.
After the performances there was a line dance. The dancers went around the tables dragging people to the dance floor and pretty soon the line was so long that it went around the tables. The show ended with a belly dancer going from table to table, dancing on a chair, while the guests finished their meals. Afterwords the dance floor opened for the public and you can imagine what followed.
Delicious food, a great show and lots of fun - and the best part? All for 30 leva per person. Doesn't get better than that!
