cows, goats, and more

Today Mom, a colleague from FISI and I went for a very nice hike in the woods. We walked and walked, and we ended up in a small cluster of houses, so small that it doesn't count as a village, even. When the villagers saw us they got very excited. Mom was very upset that couldn't speak any Bulgarian, but fortunately her colleague managed to communicate a little bit in Russian. The villagers proudly showed us their animals, some lovely cows and calves, and a not-so-friendly-towards-me dog. The cows were so cute! When the woman called the calves out they were very hungry and tried to sulk Mom's arms. Then the villagers gave Mom and her colleague some sour milk to take home and we left. We saw some goat herders on the road, and they were all so curious about me - it was so weird! They walked right up to me! I guess they had not seen a dog who wasn't trying to herd them? Who knows...

Mom was very very happy. Being a city girl, and an avid animal lover, this was just heaven for her. She'd like to go back and work for the villagers. I keep telling her she's being silly, but she insists. Well, I must admit that I wouldn't mind living with the cows, as long as that annoying dog stops barking at me.

Later in the evening we went out again and met with Mom's tour guide. She petted me and I liked her a lot, especially now that H. is gone... but then she started telling us her hardships in trying to further her education and Mom got very sad because it reminded her own life. Mom would like to help somehow. Knowing her, I'm sure she will find a way to do something, small or big.

Hey Sif, tell Mom if she wants to work with cows and goats, she can come work with me and we can make wonderful cheese!
