This morning mom tried out her new dawn simulator. A dawn simulator is just that: a machine that simulates dawn. It looks like a lamp - well, it is a lamp - that is programmable to turn on gradually in the morning and light up the room, just like daylight.
Why did mom buy this? Because she has the so-called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In plain English, this means that she is one of those creatures that need plenty of sunlight and without it, she gets messed up. Come fall, when sunlight begins to lessen, she starts noticing the effects, only to go into complete grumpiness by February, when the effects of the lack of sunlight accumulate.
So, this year she decided to be proactive and got the lamp. It was a perfect morning to try it out, too, as it was raining and there was almost no daylight. I am not sure what effect the lamp had on mom's mood, but I can tell you that the darned thing woke me up and I started pacing around about half an hour before mom woke up. So in that sense, it is effective at least. Mom's mood-wise, we shall see.
