About a week ago, our landlady came to collect the rent and to help mom file her new I.D. application. Vanja (our landlady), mom and Kiril (a student who helps with interpreting since our landlady doesn't speak English) went to the immigration office. Mom knocked on the door and they all entered. The lady who is usually there and speaks English was not there at the moment, and the other employees were too busy with their coffee and cigarettes to pay attention to the newcomers. Finally, Vanja approached someone and asked about the procedure. One guy replied in a Marlon-Brando-Godfather voice that they had to go and get the contract notarized, because mom had problems. Surprised, Vanja asked what kind of problems. The Godfather replied: "she knows".
That incident settled the question whether this whole immigration issue was random or our ex-landlord's doing. On top of all that, the employee/ex-landlord's partner tried to badmouth mom to Vanja. Fortunately, Vanja is too cool for that. Kiril and Goldie explained the situation to her and she showed a lot of understanding. She remained calm even when she found out about me - her mother came over to check on the washing machine while mom was at school and I barked at her like crazy. So the next time she came mom locked me in the bedroom and I was too busy usurping mom's bed to bark. It turns out that Vanja and her mom are very afraid of dogs but other than that she didn't have any problem with me being there, provided of course that mom keeps the place clean, which she does anyway.
So mom was very relieved that everything was out in the open now, since she doesn't do well either with hiding or lying. The week after, she went with Kiril to the immigration office again and submitted the documents which they were miraculously accepted! If all goes well, and there are no more Godfather interferences, mom should have her new I.D. by the end of the month.
