Fortunately, mom was prepared for this: early in June she had ceiling fans installed. Like everything else in our apartment, of course, this was also an ordeal. As the electrician removed the ceiling light fixtures in order to install the fans, he discovered - can you guess? - gas pipes underneath. Yep, that's gas pipes for GAS LIGHTING. What's more, they were ACTIVE gas pipes - you know, the kind that goes PSSSSSSSSSSSSS when you try to remove or break a part? Thweeeet.
Anyway, the operation was successful in the end, and the ceiling fans proved life-saving. For a while, of course, mom was ready to punch in the face the first person to walk into our apartment and say "aaawww, how I love these historical buildings!". She seems to be over it now, but I still would not recommend it.
