Catching up on the bad news

Following my last post: we stayed without a refrigerator for one whole week, during which we were on the no-refrigerator-diet: chips for mom, kibble for me. Yuck! Our landlady was out of reach for some reason, so finally mom bit the bullet and bought a new refrigerator. Small one, but with a separate freezer nevertheless, which is now stocked up with bones. All is well in the world again.

But not for mom. Two days after the refrigerator broke down, the water heater went out, too. Note that all this started happening right when mom gave our landlady notice that we'll be leaving in the end of June. Fortunately there is also the city hot water, which is not so hot, it's more expensive, and with less pressure, but it is something.

The very same week mom got yet another cold, the third one in 6 months, with the same tuberculosis-style cough. This time, she gave into traditional medicine. She went to a hospital to get an x-ray. One hour and 20 leva later (about $15) she had a lung x-ray and a preliminary diagnosis from the radiologist: pneumonia. The same evening she took the x-ray to a student's parents who are both pulmonology specialists and came back with 4 different kinds of medication. Not happy, of course, but coughing less.

There definitely is something to be said about the ease of obtaining health care in Bulgaria, especially when you are a teacher at a prestigious high-school and have friends and students with connections... ;)

Next post: proms in Bulgaria. Stay tuned!

Barbara,

Take care of yourself. I had pneumonia a couple times while growing up, and surely no fun. Are you coming back in June now? If so, let's hangout.
